Include, where relevant: your iOS version, whether the phone runs one line or two, what RoamGuard shows, what your carrier shows for the same period, and the dates involved. Screenshots help more than descriptions.

Things that actually go wrong

No alerts are arriving

Check these four, in order — the first two account for almost all of it:

  1. Notification permission. iOS › Settings › Notifications › RoamGuard › Allow Notifications. Inside RoamGuard, Settings › Sounds › Play a preview will say outright if notifications are off.
  2. Every threshold switched off. Settings › Alert thresholds. With none selected, no threshold alert can fire.
  3. Pause alerts on Wi-Fi is on and you are on Wi-Fi. Only the 100% alert gets through in that state.
  4. A Focus is filtering them. Only the 100% alert is Time Sensitive, and only if Alert me even during Focus is on — and iOS still shows Time Sensitive notifications only when that Focus permits them.

Full detail: the alerts reference.

The number is far lower than my carrier's

Almost always the start point: RoamGuard counts from the moment you installed it, not from your billing date. Install it on the 12th and the first eleven days are invisible to it. Use Match my carrier's figure once and it realigns; from the next full cycle the two track each other much more closely.

The number is higher than my carrier's

Usually zero-rated traffic your carrier does not bill, or Personal Hotspot data — the phone carried those bytes, so RoamGuard counted them. Carriers also round and batch. Realigning once absorbs the difference.

It says I am not roaming, but I am abroad

iOS gives apps no roaming API, so RoamGuard cannot detect it. Set it yourself in Settings › Roaming › Current state — a manual setting always wins and is always accurate. Turning on Detect travel automatically lets a device region different from your home region suggest roaming, which is a guess and is labelled as one on the dashboard.

The widget looks stale

The widget takes its own reading and asks iOS to refresh it roughly every half hour, paced to stay inside WidgetKit's daily budget. iOS decides when to grant that. Opening the app takes a reading immediately and reconciles the two.

The Apple Watch shows “No data yet”

The Watch app is a read-only mirror; it holds nothing of its own. Open RoamGuard on the iPhone once, with the Watch nearby, and the state is sent across.

A roaming trip will not start

The app says which of the three reasons applies: Live Activities are switched off for RoamGuard in iOS Settings; nothing has been measured yet so there is nothing to show; or iOS refused the request, which usually means another activity needs to end first.

I want to start over

Settings › Reset measurements clears the recorded history on this device and starts counting from the next reading. Your plan settings are kept. With iCloud sync on, only this device's records are removed.

What version 1.0 cannot do

Listed here rather than discovered later.

Your carrier's figure
Not available to any app. RoamGuard measures independently and lets you anchor to the carrier number by hand.
Roaming detection
Not available to any app. Your setting, or a device-region guess that is labelled as a guess.
Counting before install
Impossible. The first reading is a baseline and attributes nothing.
Per-app breakdown
Not offered. Interface counters are per interface, not per app, and the alternative — a VPN tunnel — was rejected on privacy and battery grounds.
Carrier or SIM names
Nothing public links a cellular context to a carrier, a slot or a number, so lines are numbered rather than named.
Editing the daily budget
The daily budget can only be set during first-run setup in 1.0. There is no Settings row for it yet.
Traffic across a reboot
Bytes carried between the last reading and a restart cannot be recovered — the kernel discarded them too.
Traffic across a teardown
Whatever a cellular context carried between the last reading and being torn down goes with it. RoamGuard under-counts that one interval on that one line rather than inventing a figure.
Background guarantees
iOS decides whether an app gets a background window. Totals survive a missed window; the record of which network was active during it does not.
Devices
iPhone, portrait, iOS 18.0 or later, with a watchOS 11.0 companion. There is no iPad or Mac build.

Before you write

Two pages answer most of what arrives by mail: How counting works for anything about the number, and Alerts for anything about notifications. Questions covers the rest.
