OCR scanner app for iPhone: how Scanlio turns scans into text

What OCR actually does

OCR stands for optical character recognition. It is the step that looks at the pixels of a scanned page, finds the shapes of letters and numbers, and turns them into real characters. Before OCR, a scanned contract is just an image: you can look at it, but your phone has no idea what it says. After OCR, the same PDF carries an invisible text layer under the image. The page still looks like the original, but now you can tap a word to select it, search for a client's name, or copy a paragraph.

Receipts become searchable by merchant, invoices by number, letters by sender, and a folder of a hundred scans stops being a pile of photos you have to open one by one.

On-device OCR versus cloud OCR

Many scanner apps send your pages to a server to run recognition there. Scanlio does not. Its OCR runs on the device itself, using the processing power of your iPhone, iPad or Mac. This has three practical consequences.

• Privacy. Your contracts, medical letters, tax forms and passport scans never leave the device. Scanlio has no account, no upload and no server that ever sees your documents. The privacy policy states this plainly: scanning, OCR, editing, conversion and storage all happen locally.
• Offline use. Recognition works in a basement archive, on a plane, or anywhere with no signal.
• No page quotas tied to a server. Cloud OCR costs the vendor money per page, which is why some apps cap it. Adobe Scan, for example, lists on its App Store page that its Premium plan raises OCR capacity from 5 to 100 pages. Scanlio's limits are only its own free allowance and, on Pro, none at all.

Multilingual text recognition

Scanlio's OCR is multilingual. The Scanlio website lists recognition for 100+ languages, and the App Store description describes it as accurate multilingual OCR that makes your PDFs searchable, selectable and copyable. The app's own interface is localized in 34 languages, so the menus match your device language as well.

How to OCR a scan in Scanlio, step by step

1. Scan or import. Tap the camera button and line up the page. Edge detection finds the corners automatically, so you rarely need to crop by hand. Add more pages if the document has several. You can also import an existing PDF or images (PNG, JPG, HEIC) from Files or Photos using the "+" menu.
2. Open the document. Scanlio recognizes the text so the scan becomes a searchable PDF with a real text layer. You do not need to choose a language first; the multilingual engine handles mixed pages.
3. Use the text. Select and copy words directly from the page, or open Convert and export the document as plain text or Word (.rtf) when you need the whole thing in an editor.
4. Find it later. The library offers full-text search across all your scans. Type a supplier name or an invoice number and Scanlio surfaces the matching documents, not just the ones whose file name matches.

Tips for more accurate OCR

OCR is only as good as the image it reads. A few habits make a large difference:

• Light the page evenly. Scanlio handles low light better than a plain camera, but shadows across the text still cost accuracy. Daylight from the side or an overhead lamp works best.
• Flatten the page. Curled receipts and folded letters distort character shapes. Press them flat or hold the edges down.
• Let edge detection do the crop. The automatic crop removes the table or background so the OCR engine only sees the page. If the detected frame is wrong, adjust it before saving.
• Prefer high contrast. Scanlio's output is deliberately high-contrast, which looks like a real scan rather than a photo and gives the recognizer cleaner strokes.
• Hold the phone parallel to the page. Shooting at an angle stretches the characters; keep the camera square to the paper.

Searchable, selectable and copyable PDFs

After OCR, a Scanlio PDF behaves like a document rather than a picture. You can highlight a sentence and copy it, search inside the file, and any app you share it to (Mail, Files, a cloud drive) will also see the text layer.

If you want the text without the image, the Convert screen exports PDF to plain text or to Word. That is the quickest route from a printed table of figures to something you can edit.

Free allowance and Scanlio Pro

Scanlio is free to download. Every tool in the app, OCR included, shares the same free allowance, and saving your scans is never blocked. Scanlio Pro removes the allowance entirely: unlimited OCR, the full PDF editor, e-signatures, format conversions and unlimited exports, with no ads. Scanlio OCR compared with Apple Live Text

Apple's Live Text recognizes text in a photo or a Notes scan while you are looking at it, and it is excellent for grabbing a phone number from a sign. It does not, however, build a searchable text layer across a multi-page PDF, and it does not give you a document library you can search by content. Scanlio applies OCR to the whole document, stores the result inside the file, and indexes every scan for full-text search.

Scanlio OCR compared with Adobe Scan

Adobe Scan is a capable scanner and its OCR is well regarded. The relevant difference is where and how much. According to its own App Store listing, scans are automatically saved to Adobe Document Cloud, and the Premium plan increases OCR capacity from 5 to 100 pages. Scanlio processes on the device, has no cloud storage requirement, and on Pro places no page cap on recognition.
